Tax season is known as the time when people and businesses prepare to file their income taxes for the calendar year (January 1 to December 31) to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Tax Day has typically fallen on April 15 as the deadline. Due to COVID-19 the new Tax-Filling deadline is July 15, 2020.
A J-1 visa holders are required to file taxes as “foreign persons” and their taxes it will be based on their program duration detailed on the DS-2019. J-1s are expected to file their taxes. Remember, J-1s are subject to federal, state and city income taxes. Due to their immigration status, J-1 are not subject to Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment tax deductions.
CETUSA understands that filing taxes can be challenging for our Exchange Visitor. Even though we cannot provide our participants tax advice, we would like to provide our participants with some resources that might help with tax questions.

There are a variety of online tax services that J-1 participants can use and tax professionals who can help you. Contact your CETUSA Program Administrator for more information about available tax services.
